Studio - focus on one image…
Well, some days just don’t go the way you want them to. Bit of a damp squid in the studio. Superficial work on ‘mugshot’ (working title). Vented frustration out on cleaning the yard.
05/06/24
Organising archive.
06/06/24
Late Night Art - Belfast. Traditional Route.
09/06/24
‘The Week in Art’ podcast discussing Studio Voltaire and Martha Jungwirth’s take on Goya. “Turning off the facuet of emotion.” (on O’Keefe).
The Sleep of reason.
‘Talk Art’ with Nathanaëlle Herbelin.
“Hindsight” - So bloody close! Frustrating. Too thick in hair and isn’t dynamic as rest of picture. Deep breath. Could be worse and be no where near close to finishing - silver charcoal filled linings.
Still haven’t heard anything from S.P. show.
12/06/24
…found wanting. Rinse head - take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
F.W.A.
13/06/24
Being really fucking ballsy!
14/06/24
Didn’t get solo chance. Ah well. Up to Belfast for opening of ArtsFest III.
Great turnout!
16/06/24
Cleaning works in the lower garage. Some damaged beyond repair.
“Hindsight Study” finished. Some substantial progress to “Four Years On”.
19/06/24
23/06/24
Great day.
25 + 26/24
Family sick days so just a total wipeout.
Visual / Ocular Migraine.
30/06/24
Started the day off bright and early with some sketching from photos taken throughout the week.
“Four Years On” finished.
Larger portrait started. Good way to end the month.

Late Night Art Belfast
A busy busy night!
05/05/24
Added crow / plague mask to soldier’s face. Not sure where, if anywhere, it’s going to go. Ran it’s course perhaps? Palette cleansed.
…action painting?
08/05/24
“Gallery Visit” showing in ArtFest 3!
Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.
09/05/24
Would be good to start thinking about plan…
10/05/24
12/05/24
Drawings to acetate. Cuprinol spillage - use to benefit? Bleached out wartime work - it reached the end. So, today in the studio - rather than painting… worked on drawing up new canvases. NB: Paint needed through the week.
Three works started - went for a dander in a thundery downpour holding a couple of the new canvases over my head. Letting the heavy raindrops move the unfixed charcoal. Funny, the momento mori could have done with a few more and the ‘Tesla’ a little less. HINDSIGHT!
12/05/24
Hold the family close. Bus decompress time.
18/05/24
19/05/24
20/05/24
If you’re going to do something, do it right!
26/05/24
“Week in Art” Mona Lisa interview really interesting. “The living earth”.
“Talk Art” Shaqúelle Whyte.
Solid progress. No titles as yet - Hindsight? Could work for all three really.
29/05/24
Dublin.
It’s always sunny in Dublin.

Crow in flight. Morrigán. Could see the stabbed brush marks of the wings when watching it in flight. Weird. Aren’t we all?
Time needs to be set aside for practice. Shia LaBeouf.
Sounds like an excuse but a certain letter has thrown a real spanner in the works.
NB: Forgot to jot down that ‘Red Lines’ has been accepted into this years’ Royale Arcade Academy show at Arcade Studios.
07/09/23
LATE NIGHT ART - Belfast
Some very late-night sketching.
09/09/23
Setting your stall.
10/09/23
Art Wank Podcast with Array - listening during studio time.
“Painting is a place to hide thoughts, hide feelings, hide emotions.”
- Stephen Millar
The Arts are not singular. Arts as a united force for good. Collaboration.
You can’t eat prestige (or a flag).
‘Ready to Go’ blocked out. Not sure if it’s a damp squib but I think it’s worth another shot.
‘Marina’ - content with background. Loose is good. So bloody close.
13/09/23
H.B.S.
After a bit of mulling - the ‘Ready to Go’ canvas is anything but. I have forgotten the first rule:
IF IT DOESN’T EXCITE YOU THEN THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG
It is not and it is also an image that, if it’s going to work, will need another image merged to elevate it.
It is a solid image, and it has a resonance with me personally but it’s just not doing it for me, for the want of a better phrase.
Handed in ‘Red Lines’ to Arcade. Stopped by the MAC to see ‘No History in a Room filled with People wih Funny Names 5’ by Korakrit Arunanondchai and Alex Gvojic with Tosh Basco. An extremely immersive experience.
Abhartach - the Irish Vampire.
Black / Peaty Soil. Roots become negative space. Possible triptych?
14/09/23
Abhartach - source material…
This will be for down the line. Even the little portrait alongside ‘Ready to Go’ on acetate has more promise and, more importantly, has my head spinning!
Back of the bus, it’s been a long time.
Can see where… might have an advantage. More time. Been reading “The World New Made - Figurative Painting in the 20th Century” by Timothy Hyman.
“I was alone in my studio in front of my oil lamp. Two or three in the morning… Dawn is breaking… I used to sit up like that all night long. My lamp burned, and I with it.”
- Marc Chagall c.1920
Henri Rousseau = recovered a primal truth in painting.
17/09/23
Short Sunday Sessions.
“Marina” finished! But only just. A little over indulgent with the fixative meant some emergency fixing (irony) was needed.
If I had my wits about me I should’ve drawn up a new canvas in the 45 minutes spare. Hindsight.
“Look to Henri Rousseau as examplar for a renewal of figural language reborn in the image of childhood.”
- Timothy Hyman
18/09/23
20 week scan. All well! Surreal.
Also, on the way to Causeway - a lovely note, Warm, fuzzy feeling.
21/09/23
22/09/23
Breaking the Cultural Code - Tenth Anniversary of Derry’s UK City of Culture.
“Culture is everyday lived experience.”
- Sir Phil Redmond
Culture Night Derry
24/09/23
Studio time. There was a temptation to rework ‘Ready to Go’ for a minute. Had to remind myself that structurally it’s interesting but it doesn’t excite me to see where it can go.
“A Brush with… Claudette Johnson”
A really promising start to three canvases today.
25/09/23 & 26/09/23
BP high. Ordered to Antrim A&E. Arrived at 7pm - didn’t get seen until 10am on Tuesday. Tests to be done and rest needed. Poor timing.
28/09/23
…day in court.
29/09/23
VAI Get Together 2023 - Online day.
Imogen Stidworthy - How We Work.

…no more diddly-dallyin’, let’s get right on into this Sunday studio session. (IYKYK)
Substantial progress on “Put it Away”. Little prayer piece, not so much.
12/06/23
So “Put it Away” moving along nicely and a little surprisingly. The new paints are making a difference, I think.
13/06/23
Visit to the Belfast School of Art Degree Show.
14/06/23
Didn’t get to sketch tonight as intended but there will be time set aside.
Mythology / Semiotics
…venturing onwards…
It’s just dawned on me that Saturdays will alter. Well, they’ll change a good few times in the coming years. But - as always, adapt, re-organise, create, repeat.
15/06/23
After all that graft … to be left at home.
Lovely comment today. Left painting over to Catalyst for showcase and auction coming up.
18/06/23
Studio time now. Let’s see where these go.
Quick notes for Prey/Pray:
charcoal first
contrast facial tones
less marks in hair - blurred or subdued
Quick notes for “In a Corner/ Huff”
Scrape paint on walls - flatter
T-Shirt work
NB: Didn’t get as much done as I would like to.
19/06/23
PRINTS HAVE DROPPED!!!
20/06/23
FB Memories - use to dust cobwebs off? Also just having the small sketchbook close by - for out and about.
Is it too fuzzy? Probably do no harm to have the mini sketchbook around with me - as was the original idea for it.
One thing I have noticed, and it’s a good thing. With the two journeys on the bus three times a week and the time at lunch, I’ve noticed some considerably more writing / thinking time / ideas coming into RD.
I’ve even started bringing a book with me on the bus. Although The Iliad was probably a poor first choice. I am eager to delve into mythology / symbolism again.
The legend of “Bisclavret” has been crawling through my head the past few days.
IIW = IMAGES IN WAITING
21/06/23
Quick stop to see the work in Catalyst’s Showcase.
22/06/23
23/06/23
Our beautiful Bonnie, my studio assistant and my dad’s blonde shadow passed away in her sleep last night. Everyone is hurting. 12 and a half wonderful years. The best girl.
24/06/23
…called in to say hello… folds around eye went in such a way that it looked like he didn’t have a socket let alone an eye. Hard to explain.
Quick Question = Very Quick Yes
25/06/23
“A Brush With… Jacqueline Humphries”.
Finished “Let Us Pray”. Areas successful, others not.
28/06/23
Dublin Bound.
Culchie boy, I love you / Grá mo chroí thú, mo chábóigín féin – Kian Benson Bailes at the Project Arts Centre.
“an atom bomb in each morsel of life” by Katherine Sankey in the LAB Gallery. Beautiful aroma in that first box space.
RDH: DECEMBER 2022
Sketchbook work - it’s been way too long!
03/12/22
Quick studio time…
… as suspected, it didn’t take much to get last two paintings of the year over the line. Still aiming to keep the (well, less is more is a little inaccurate) “Stop before I think I should” mentality.
Definitely less misses with this strategy.
08/12/22
‘New Exits: 10 Years of Painting’ opening at the MAC. Excellent show. Daniel Coleman’s painting ‘The House Down the Lane’ is absolutely stunning. It moved me to tears. A real stand out from a strong group show.
11/12/22
Freezing in the studio.
Drew up two small works (having a crack at the ‘Jaws’ image again - with a slightly altered composition) and have set up to take a look at a couple of pieces that have fallen through the cracks recently.
‘Street Walker’ and ‘Laughing Man’ (working titles).
17/12/22
Wood is for the living, stone for the dead.
Said farewell to GT’s reading round. It’s been such a boost having this weekly outlet of chatting, sharing ideas and making connections. Had a great run!
Stream of admin this evening.
18/12/22
“Tomorrow is Saturday” - Interesting documentary on Sean Hillen.
28/12/22
Studio time. “The Week in Art: 2022 in review” podcast.
Blocking in on the small piece. ‘Man looking in his pocket while descending the stairs’ or ‘Looking for keys’ OR ‘Check your pocket’.
29/12/22
Newcastle.
30/12/22
Penultimate day of the year. admin and prep before a few hours in the studio!
For the time of the year that it is, I find myself in a bit of a reflective and thankful mood. 2022 has been good to me.
Collaborative residency and exhibition with Catalyst.
Work shown at the Boyle Arts Festival, Roscommon.
Part of the Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition in the Ulster Museum, Belfast.
Gave a talk with Basic Space Dublin in the Hugh Lane Gallery.
And most importantly, became a father!
