Basil Blackshaw: Selected Works in Ulster Presents. Always something incredibly moving about the last work an artist worked on. Almost like a lifetime's experience culminating into one last piece.
Late Night Art - East Belfast. Visit to Platform, Strand Arts Centre, Arts Care and Creative Exchange. Loud in between.
Have really gotten out of the way of note taking. Subbed for worse habits. How to rectify? Stop. Breathe. Think.
15/09/24
Studio time. Portrait - ‘Never Be Seen’. All but there. Some moments where the background tone looks fine and works well and others where it looks like a mistake and falls apart. Chips and changes - probably down to the light through the day (or indecisiveness).
Resting on it for now.
22/09/24
One week on and yes, the background definitely needs addressed. Worked it so its back to a very similar colour to how it started. Finished and full circle.
29/09/24
Studio and 'Tesla' painting is gone - for now. Drawing up new works.
What words or text become like the ground of a painting?

Some good starts. 'RfaC’ redeemed somewhat for now.

Studio time finally - after a slightly longer than usual cleaning session.
Not much progress made with “Turn to Page Five” but still feels great to put paint down after seventeen days of renovating, family time and north coast fun!
04/08/24
“Restraint Study” handed in. Crossed fingers…
Took myself up to the Ulster Museum afterwards to finally catch the two Caravaggio works together for a rare time since the 17th Century.
“The Supper at Emmaus” (1601) and “The Taking of Christ” (1602). The first time in a long time where I just sat in awe. Spent nearly an hour just soaking them up (from near and far). He really was the master of light and shadow. Today has brought memories back of my last trip to the National Gallery in London back in 2019 and a reaction in front of another Caravaggio - “Boy Bitten by a Lizard” (1594-1596). Skipping past pockets of school kids getting guided tours, I stumbled upon it, right in the corner of the room.
There was a guide giving a talk to a class of children about a much larger painting just beside the Caravaggio. Can’t mind what it was - but it was a big canvas. Anyway, I’m looking at the painting and I suddenly start to feel myself well up - and I couldn’t stop it. I started crying.
I remember being in shock and some of the class beside me were staring and whispering among other. Because of where the Caravaggio was in the gallery, I was sort of pinned in with the school kids sitting on the floor all around listening to the guide speak. I eventually had to make a break for it, snaking past them to get out. First time I ever cried at a work.
The next time that happened I think was with Daniel Coleman’s epic work in the MAC show a while back. The sheer audacity of scale, the use of colour in the limited palette - everything took breath away to the point I got choked up.

Honey ate more paint than I thought. More put out. “Turn to Page Five” - dark, ochry brown background? Semi-transparent?
FINISHED. Thought I had nearly messed it up with a little too much fixative but managed to pull it back OK.
12/08/24
“Restraint Study” accepted into the RUA! Chuffed!
18/08/24
Three wonderful years - and a lifetime ahead!
Tried a jaunt to the studio - not feeling it. Will try to block in some colour to “bin” piece.
22/08/24
Sketchbook work before bed.
So, after a layer or two on the “bin” piece, it was time to say goodbye. Just wasn't working, especially with the background. So working a new image on top and starting a new portrait from scratch on a nice, clean canvas.

Wasn’t successful in Mayo application. Onwards.
Not too much art related happenings this week and next - decorating the kitchen and having some family holiday time. Must make a point of getting thoughts / ideas / notes down as and when if possible. There have been a couple of instances where something has popped into view mentally relating to practice but since they weren;’t recorded, they have faded into lost memories.

I have been thinking about what was put to [redacted] for the [redacted]. Advice could (and should) be taken on board closer to home.
Certain circumstances, mean that practice has taken a back seat - as it should - but this shouldn’t be an excuse to down tools completely and end any creative activity that could be happening. I don’t know if I could fully switch off anyway.
Just because the practical studio and office / sketchbook time is lowered doesn't mean all artistic outlets dry up! There is room in other spaces. Even now, trying to carve out some creative time will be important. Use any spare time wisely - but also enjoy the early days of baby number 2!
10/02/24

Studio - A.H. portrait study: A good start. There was one point where the charcoal became a little too much but thankfully it wasn’t difficult to rectify. Just before adding the last layer of charcoal, all the previous drawing marks were pushed back with just the paint taking the stage. Some nice areas of tonal quality but overall the image was flat. You would think that adding a charcoal line would make it even more flat in appearance but the opposite is the case! The crux of it - that interplay between the drawing line and the painting mark.

…worth sticking foot in the door.
22/10/23
Studio time. A long session but very little to show for it. Slow progress on all fronts. Perhaps working on multiple pieces (four canvases) is biting a little more off than I can chew?
Setting a couple of pieces off to the side for a while should make it more manageable. It probably hasn’t helped that the palette is in a poor state and needs cleaned badly. Not a complete loss of a day but it could’ve been a lot more fruitful. Several factors at play but, lesson learned.
Palette given a good scrub before finishing up.

The Arts are not singular. Arts as a united force for good. Collaboration.
You can’t eat prestige (or a flag).
‘Ready to Go’ blocked out. Not sure if it’s a damp squib but I think it’s worth another shot.
‘Marina’ - content with background. Loose is good. So bloody close.
13/09/23
H.B.S.
After a bit of mulling - the ‘Ready to Go’ canvas is anything but. I have forgotten the first rule:
IF IT DOESN’T EXCITE YOU THEN THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG
It is not and it is also an image that, if it’s going to work, will need another image merged to elevate it.
It is a solid image, and it has a resonance with me personally but it’s just not doing it for me, for the want of a better phrase.
Handed in ‘Red Lines’ to Arcade. Stopped by the MAC to see ‘No History in a Room filled with People wih Funny Names 5’ by Korakrit Arunanondchai and Alex Gvojic with Tosh Basco. An extremely immersive experience.
Abhartach - the Irish Vampire.
Black / Peaty Soil. Roots become negative space. Possible triptych?
14/09/23
Abhartach - source material…
This will be for down the line. Even the little portrait alongside ‘Ready to Go’ on acetate has more promise and, more importantly, has my head spinning!
Back of the bus, it’s been a long time.

Reset desperately needed. Very distracted creatively at the minute. Whatever time can be set aside MUST be used for artistic purposes. Hopefully will get on the right track. Am I too harsh on myself?
Pleased to be a part of Catalyst Arts Member’s Show.
20/08/23
Some progress but not much. Don’t want to dwell on this too much but, as an honest self-assessment in a diary context, WTF. The will to paint is there at times, at others it’s the furthest thing from mind. Perhaps if there were one or two short - medium term targets. Something to aim for may light the fire again.

I wonder if the morning papers would work for sketchbook work. Probably not unlike what Maggie Hambling does as part of her morning routine.
It’s a beautiful morning. The sun is blinding in the brilliant flashes as the bus winds and turns heading across the river Bann. Wall to wall blue. …solo heart to heart, I did my best to be less distracted last night. It’s about being conscious about the negative habits and aiming to nip them in the bud as quick as possible that should really make pay dividends.
Sore neck = Poor Posture.
…give myself permission…
You’d think that well over a decade I should know the answer.
IDEAS / DRAWING / REFLECTIONS / LISTS
Anything goes. The only rule is to put pen to paper every day as much as possible.
Life has a way of happening around you so if shit happens and venting is needed. That’s OK. A.i.L. - L.i.A.
Observing more can only be a good thing - possible leads into other areas of practice. Maybe best to not get too carried away.
Called into Anne Butler’s show “Objects in Time” at the GT on lunch. Such beautiful detail and intricacy in something so delicate and heavy. Love it when materials aim to confuse - mimic characteristics of another.
27/08/23
“Ready to Go” - does it need scaled up? Looking at the “Rooftop / Marina” piece, there are elements in the city scape that are working. Nice, loose and gestural marks but it still needs a lot of work. For the roof in the foreground, less charcoal marks perhaps? Just get something down.
“RtG” charcoaled up, witg the figure more prominent, its already looks like a far more intertersting composition. Solid progres on “Marina” today, especially the cityscape. SSS' aren’t to be taken lightly.
NB: SSS stands for Short Sunday Sessions.

Is it too fuzzy? Probably do no harm to have the mini sketchbook around with me - as was the original idea for it.
One thing I have noticed, and it’s a good thing. With the two journeys on the bus three times a week and the time at lunch, I’ve noticed some considerably more writing / thinking time / ideas coming into RD.
I’ve even started bringing a book with me on the bus. Although The Iliad was probably a poor first choice. I am eager to delve into mythology / symbolism again.

21/05/23
Studio time.
Going somewhere and then damn near destroyed ‘Mugshot’ piece. Taking some time and stepping back helped save the day.
Looking is still working.
Brought it back. Relying too heavily on the charcoal mark can sometimes lead to images turning into a caricature of itself. Pared back the drawing line - focussed on the tones and limited palette that don’t stray too far from each other. Much more successful as a whole now. Bit more to go but good otherwise.
25/05/23
Luc Tuymans - surgical precision. All working out is done beforehand - composition, colours, size, materials all planned in advance so that intelligence goes from the brain (in the preparation stages) to the hand (in the making). I don’t know if that would work for me. That split second spontaneity - yes it can go wrong and often does - is needed for play with materials. Having a regimented script when painting would not work for me.
Need to catch a grip. Too easily distracted by shiny things.

“What fascinates you about that bastard?”
Definitely evokes a response. Is it worth it to get response based on the sources for the work rather than the work itself? A pickle. It’s not a glorification of a person’s actions. It is a study, an investigation of a portrait of evil. Aesthetic response to traumatic event.
Ethics vs Aesthetics.
In the end, I’m never speaking or working for anyone but myself.
Wee bit of progress on little prayer canvas. Could the two be companion pieces?

Penultimate day of the year. admin and prep before a few hours in the studio!
For the time of the year that it is, I find myself in a bit of a reflective and thankful mood. 2022 has been good to me.
Collaborative residency and exhibition with Catalyst.
Work shown at the Boyle Arts Festival, Roscommon.
Part of the Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition in the Ulster Museum, Belfast.
Gave a talk with Basic Space Dublin in the Hugh Lane Gallery.
And most importantly, became a father!
There have been losses also. People who have impacted our lives that have moved on, but their imprint will remain.
So much to be thankful for, a loving family, the support of friends and loved ones during the highs and lows. Also, to those who took a chance on my work, who invited me to be a part of their projects:

Royal Ulster Academy opening. Craig Donald won an award for best portrait! A great night all round and chuffed to see my little painting up on the wall with some wonderful artists.
14/10/22
Early start. Perhaps the X in X4 stands for extra-long.
Talk in the Hugh Lane couldn’t have gone any better. Pleased with the reaction and feedback from everyone and profoundly grateful to Basic Space for the opportunity to speak.
15/10/22
‘A Brush With… William Kentridge’.
charcoal - the indeterminacy of the point.
… at the edge of meaning.
“Give an image the benefit of the doubt… there is a danger in certainty.”
William Kentridge.

Smooth out the dog / red?
New piece / Loosey Goosey
* LOOK AT WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE SPACE! *
Nearly ruined ‘Ode’ piece with a flood of red. Hopefully brought it back.
06/03/22
Didn’t stray too far.
07/03/22
Really good chat with writer for ‘Ogham’.
08/03/22
It’s never going to be finished!
12/03/22
Final day of ‘Ogham’ residency.
Painted me wee heart out, finishing two larger pieces and having some fun with the smaller study of Stephanie Tanney’s casts.
Wet walk home.
13/03/22
A slight onset of melancholia creeping up now that the residency is over. But, the show is still to come!
15/03/22
A process of threads?
All of this is temporary?
A pause in the process?
Settling of the sands?
THIS IS NOT THE END
17/03/22
Exhibition open to the public today.
20/03/22
Louise Bourgeois - “A spider creates from it’s own body.”
Pregnant with atmosphere, enigma.
Great to get painting in garage today and get palette cleaned up.
27/03/22
Imogen Rhonda Kielt, born in the early hours of Mother’s Day. 7lbs 6oz. Perfect and everyone well.
Can see so many loved ones’ faces in this tiny new one. It’s just incredible.
29/03/22
Working to find a rhythm.
31/03/22
Belfast Bound. Helped add some chalk to Joy’s Entry for Rachel Macmanus’ superb performance. So good to see the show in the flesh blown and all involved in the project at Catalyst Arts.
It’s been a great experience at a time I will never forget.

Daft Punk Live - Alive. Frantic.
Sketch with music on in the background. No Show and Tell, just Tell.
05/02/22
4,000 weeks. Poetics of space.
Great to meet up with J.A. and S.T and to see Catalyst’s new space.
Quick jaunt to the GT and to the MAC in the morning. Edy Fung’s and Ronnie Hughes’ work were great! Hughes’ translucent layers of paint suck you in and grab hold. Shimmering colour clashes.
Head is buzzing with ideas. Exciting!
06/02/22
Mary Beard’s Forbidden Art. - Pan and the She-Goat.
Daphne Todd - painted recently dead mother.
“Violence will always be a part of the human experience.”
Mary Beard
It’s been an odd weekend. Great but odd.
Ideas are starting to be slid into place about how ‘Ogham’ will be approached. Churning away so keep faith.
It’s been a limbo sort of a day. Feeling the need to do SOMETHING - but not being able to find the energy.
Reading, research, drawing, responding.
Readymade… Domestic
So, actually I retract the ‘limbo’ statement. I did do things today. I was productive. It’s just there wasn’t any tangible outcome. Case and point… 7th page.
07/02/22
Sketchbook with Daft Punk on - upping the tempo.
08/02/22
Fabric search.
Carving out ideas. Scrap yard.
09/02/22
H.B.M. Looking forward to getting into the garage this weekend.
Let’s give it a goo!

17/02/22
J.A. Studio Visit!
19/02/22
Studio time! Finally! Using just titanium white and charcoal - both willow and compressed - to work up images. Going back to my process’ roots - year 2 in art college. Two new works started.
22/02/22
‘Ogham’ has begun. Dog study - black dog. Great to see what S.T. is doing in the space and Rachel’s response.
SLOW AND LOW SHOOTING STAR.
24/02/22
Snow! Appointment done.
25/02/22
Belfast bound. Scared guide dog on the 212.
Great to get into the space at Catalyst and set up for the next two days. Began working on two pieces. ‘Don't Look’ in ogham.
The fourth wall is glass. Casting of mouth by S.T. Reminds me of ‘Red Dragon’ from the SotL prequel of the same name.
26/02/22
Day two in the space. Time is not our friend but still have to remind ourselves that there’s no end goal needed. Just to respond and be creatively present.
So good to meet Rachel and see Steph’s process in the flesh.

“Infant Terrible” finished. - Less is more.
09/12/21
Dire.
14/12/21
Tinnitus - bit of a surprise.
Great to finally see John Rainey’s ‘SLIP TANK’ in the Naughton Gallery today. Hands down, the best sculptor in the North.
15/12/21
“The impulse to discover and re-contextualise rather than to generate a picture reintroduces questions of intention. Why did they pick that? What did they do to it? To what end?”
16/12/21
Fractured narratives.
Sketchbook time. Good to do something creative for the first time in a long while.
18/12/21
Light at the end of the tunnel?
21/12/21
22/12/21
New year will be a fresh start. Exciting!
23/12/21
Christmas Eve-Eve. News from yesterday have just evaporated the angst that has been looming overhead the past few weeks. Can now settle down and enjoy the holidays with the family minus the worry.
27/12/21
A Clean palette and tidy studio.
28/12/21
Very early rise. Studio time FINALLY!
Topography of Man - surveillance?
30/12/21
With two pieces at a treacherous crossroads, there is that leap of faith needed. If they go sideways then that’s alright. It can be rectified or started again.
There is that strange debilitating fear when work is at a junction like this. It’s easy to kick the can down the road and avoid messing any work that has gone before.
Last day in the studio for the year. Maybe this added to the frantic energy but “Label” and “Under Surveillance” have changed beyond recognition. Darker and Simplified.
Fresh eyes will know whether to continue working or not. A good day.
RDH: NOVEMBER 2021
03/11/21
Some good sketchbook work today.
04/11/21
National Common Sense Day. “Portrait of NI: Neither an elegy nor a manifesto” in the Golden Thread Gallery. Interesting layout, gathering work of a similar ilk throughout the decades together.
Anne Tallentire’s “But this material…” in the MAC; great use of spatial interaction with the work and the gallery space. Some really strong work in “The presence of Absence” exhibition from the MFA 2019 cohort group show in QSS.
Really enjoyed the opening of the “Salonathon Show 2021” in Platform - seeing my work alongside some great artists and meeting up with familiar faces!
05/11/21
Wincing the odd time.
06/11/21
“Portraiture exposes the gap between the interior and exterior selves.”
